The Big Picture

Australia Day would be the perfect occasion for the home side to wrap up the one-day series, but for the sake of the remaining contests an England victory is what's really needed. The visitors have played some poor cricket, especially in the last two matches, with the batting faring badly. A defeat here and the plane home won't be able to come soon enough.

That, though, won't be any concern of Australia's. They desperately needed to regain some belief following the Ashes and with coloured clothes back on they are beginning to hit their stride. England haven't forced them to play at their best, but even with injuries they are building up a head of steam. David Hussey was the star at the SCG as he showed his finishing skills, which will be valuable at the World Cup, but Brett Lee took the Man-of-the-Match award and he has led the attack superbly.

England's bowlers have actually performed a decent role, considering that it has been a second string attack, and the likes of Ajmal Shahzad, Chris Tremlett and Chris Woakes show the depth available. But somewhere in the transition from Tests to one-dayers key batsmen have lost the skill to convert starts into big innings.

It's a feeling of déjà vu as far as both sides are concerned. In the aftermath of the 2009 Ashes, also won by England, the one-day series was a horribly lop-sided affair as Australia cruised to a 6-1 drubbing. If the hosts continue their winning streak in Adelaide, it's very easy to see this series going the same way.

Watch out for...

James Anderson was given a break after the Ashes but following 10 days at home with his new baby has returned to the tour in the nick of time. Although England's quicks have performed an admirable role, Anderson's experience of 133 matches will be a valuable addition. He's got fond memories of Adelaide after his impact during the Test match when he helped reduce Australia to 3 for 2 on the first morning and is a dangerous operator with the new white ball.

Cameron White has played a couple of valuable innings in this series; his 25 at Melbourne helped Shane Watson complete victory and his 45 at Hobart began the first recovery. He'll want to make his decent form count in the remainder of this series because, even though his place is secure, there will be strong competition for batting places if Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey both recover. With his immense power White shouldn't have a problem clearing the square boundaries at the Adelaide Oval and against the spinners even the straight hits aren't out of reach.

Michael Clarke said no risks will be taken with any player before the World Cup so Shaun Tait (thigh) and Mitchell Johnson (throat infection) remain doubtful. It means Australia could field the same attack that did an impressive job in Sydney.

Big Picture

All's been quiet on the controversy front over the past few months for Pakistan, but the announcement of a World Cup squad without a captain has stoked trouble again. Claims that the team was divided into camps supporting Test skipper Misbah-ul-Haq and limited-overs leader Shahid Afridi grew louder following a resounding nine-wicket defeat to New Zealand three days after the squad announcement.

Pakistan's familiar batting frailties cropped up in Wellington, and the second one-dayer could be a continuation of the same. It is being played in Queenstown, a much-loved spot for adventure-sport enthusiasts, but far less welcoming to batsmen - the average first-innings score is 173.

New Zealand's batting hasn't had much to boast about in the recent past either, though they made short work of the target of 125 in the first one-dayer. Their new coach, John Wright, has stressed the importance of having a strong middle and lower order, which has resulted in Brendon McCullum being pushed down to No. 6. The batting weaknesses of both sides seem of have weighed heavily on the team managements and they have responded by adding meat lower down - in the first ODI Abdul Razzaq batted as low as No. 8, while in Queenstown Daniel Vettori is slated to come in at No. 9.

The big gain for New Zealand in Wellington, before the end of a dreadful run in one-dayers, is their quick bowling, with Tim Southee in top form and Hamish Bennett proving a handful on his return from injury.

Players to watch out for …

Umar Akmal has lost his way after a spectacular start to his career, which raised hopes that Pakistan had unearthed someone to lend steel to a fragile middle-order. He wasn't picked in the Tests, and his hold on a one-day spot is also shaky. The golden duck on Saturday made things worse, but given his undoubted talented, a substantial innings can't be far.

Hamish Bennett, the strongly built Canterbury fast bowler, was impressive on home debut in Wellington, working up speeds in the mid-140s and hassling the batsmen with bounce. With New Zealand lacking an out-and-out fast bowler since the retirement of Shane Bond, Bennett could be the man who provides teeth to the pace attack.

John Wright has said he would like all members of New Zealand's World Cup 15 to get a game in the series. Jamie How, the Central Districts batsman, gets his chance on Wednesday, taking the place of offspinner Nathan McCullum.

Offspinner Saeed Ajmal lost his place as a starter in the South Africa series, and he might again lose out to left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman.

The two teams face off in the second one day international on Friday 5th November. This series is important to both the sides in preparation for the World Cup and also significantly important for Australians to gain some momentum before Ashes. Sri Lanka would be confident after impressive start to this tour. Australia are a tough team to beat at home, but things can be different this time around.

The series began with Australia losing their first ever T20 game at home in their history. Australians are going through a patchy time in cricket. Razzaq's innings at Sheikh Zayed Stadium might still be playing on South Africans as they take field for the fourth one day international at Dubai. Pakistan started shakily to the series but have started improving as the series is progressing.
The two teams gear up for the fourth ODI at Dubai Cricket Stadium. Both teams are suffering from quick changes to their squads. Both would be looking to have a settled side before World Cup as they prepare to go further into the series.

Pakistan have looked a reformed team following Abdul Razzaq's innings, they are looking a fresh team with a winning attitude and boosting confidence. There are however more than one things to worry about for them, the team changes have hurt them a lot.
Dropping three of their key players in form of Umar Akmal, Umar Gul and Misbah ul Haq hasn't helped their cause to shape up a team for the upcoming World Cup. The pitch at Dubai Cricket Stadium is expected to be slightly tougher to bat on than in Abu Dhabi. The fourth game on 5th November will be crucial for both teams. Pakistan bowling has been inconsistent in this series i.e. they have performed well on some occasions and failed on others. It would be interesting to see what they do on Friday.

Pakistan will play South Africa in the first T20I of the two match T20I series at Abu Dhabi. The game will be played on Tuesday, October 26.

Pakistan is the host of the tour by South Africa but because of the security situation back home, Abu Dhabi and Dubai have been the neutral venues chosen to host the entire series. This includes two Test matches and five ODIs as well and will see the Pakistanis trying to win something this year.

Pakistan has had a very bad lead-up to the series. They had an abysmal tour of England where they not only lost all the series that they had played but were also involved in so many controversies that there were rumours that they may be banned from playing cricket. There were match fixing and spot fixing allegations and the side saw three of the cricketers being provisionally suspended by the ICC for the same.

Speaking of their on-field cricket, their issue has been their batting but in this format of the game, they are expected to do well. Younis Khan makes a comeback to the side but it remains to be seen whether the former captain can play in the T20Is or will be directly play the other two formats. Mohammad Yousuf is out due to injury while Shahid Afridi will continue to lead the side despite issues with the Pakistan cricket board. It was said that the Pakistani management that included the captain Afridi and coach Waqar Younis were not happy with the team that they had got but they had had no say in the decision.

South Africa, on the other hand, go into the T20Is with a new captain. Johan Botha has replaced Graeme Smith in the T20Is and will look to command as much respect as Smith did when he was the captain. So far, Botha's initiation has been good enough - in a series against Australia where he was the stand-in captain he had won the series for them, while against Zimbabwe, he led them to a 2-0 win.

However, playing Pakistan on the slow and low wickets of Abu Dhabi could just be a different ball game altogether. South Africa will need to adapt themselves to the tracks which are going to be unlike those back home and things could get interesting. AB de Villiers will be the wicket-keeper.

India are 1-0 up in the three match series with only one game to go. Things look good for India ahead of New Zealand assignment. It is very evident from attitudes of both teams that the one day series is an unimportant one and both the teams are looking beyond the series, perhaps the World Cup. Big names from both the teams are missing.

This has made series interesting as it gives a chance of youngsters of both the countries to shine and reserve a birth for the Subcontinent World Cup next year.

India would enter to play at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Goa with little worries. They already have an uncatchable lead against a battling Australian team. Perhaps the only worry in the Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni mind would be their fast bowlers. But again India have learned to live with that worry.

They will be a compact unit with many of their players in confidence and fancying to shine in front of home crowd. One thing that seemed to have gone milder is the fact that these two are bitter rivals who cherish and celebrate every victory over each other. This would motivate this new look Indian team to carry on and snatch only chance of victory from Australia on this tour. Virat Kohli was magnificent in the last game and would like to be backbone of Indian batting on 24th October. India had chased a big target of 290 with relative ease and therefore will be upbeat for another run fest.

India have won three of their last five games.

Australia, with the Ashes coming up, World Cup in the corner, nothing seems to be going right for them. Australia like India were missing big names but the performance on 20th October exposed the serious lack of depth in an aging Australian side. Michael Clarke, few doubt his ability to lead, seemed out of options with his bowlers.

Australia, more than any team in the world would want to win now. They have been humiliated for far too long by England, Pakistan and now India. They certainly would look to level the series on Sunday and restore some pride and confidence. Their batsmen would be at ease having put up a decent show last time around, but their ground fielding and bowling needs serious improvement if they want to win on 24th October. Australia have a history of making comebacks form lowly positions. We can have a compelling game in store for us in Goa on Sunday.

India play Pakistan in the fourth game of the Asia Cup at Dambulla. The Indians had made mincemeat of Bangladesh in the first game of the tournament, whereas Pakistan had lost a narrow game to Sri Lanka first up, after they had batted second, under the lights and yet, almost chased down the target.

India's heroes in the first game were Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag. While Gambhir smashed an 80 to guide his side to the win, Sehwag's performances came with the ball, as he scalped figures of 4/6 in 17 balls to end the Bangladeshi resistance.

For Pakistan, the previous game had seen the likes of Shoaib Akhtar and Shahid Afridi bowl and bat rather well but failing to achieve the win. Akhtar returned back to international cricket with a three wicket haul and ensured that the side would benefit from his return as the Lankans were throttled thanks to that. at the other end, Afridi's century was one of the best in the business, but his untimely cramping meant that the side was in deep trouble by the time he was sent back.

India, on the other hand, showed signs of rustiness in the early part of the game when they bowled, but came back well to overcome the Bangladeshi batsmen. However, they will need to be careful of the manner in which they bowl, as the stronger teams in Sri Lanka and Pakistan will not spare the Indian bowlers as lightly as the Bangladeshis did.

Against Pakistan, it will be interesting to see whether the Indians try out something different if they bowl first. Zaheer and co. did not seem to be getting much help from the wicket in the early part of the Bangladesh game, but it must also be said that they lacked rhythm.

The good thing from India's point of view is that Zaheer Khan usually gets better as he bowls more and more, and one can expect him to make a comeback against Pakistan. Praveen Kumar did swing the ball around, but it was, rather surprisingly, the spinners who did well.

The battle to look forward to will be the one between Harbhajan Singh and Shahid Afridi, both of whom would love to have a go against each other. Afridi had already shown that he can take on Muralitharan, and he will look to do the same against Bhajji as well. It remains to be seen how well Harbhajan and India respond to that onslaught.
